Sakura Science Exchange Program

10 September 2019

The Sakura Science Exchange Program is an initiative by the government of Japan to promote globalization of Japanese institutions, to strengthen the good networking and linkages with other countries, as well as to support the development of talents in the field of science and technology. This year, Prof. Katsuki Kusakabe (Director of Sojo International Center, Sojo University) had received the approval and funding from Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) to support the exchange program. Eight postgraduate students from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS under Chemical Engineering and Fundamental and Applied Sciences Department, and affiliated with the Centre for Biofuel and Biochemical Research (CBBR) under the Institute of Self-Sustainable Building (ISB) were invited to participate in this program from 25th to 31st August 2019. The program was coordinated by Prof. Yoshimitsu Uemura and assisted by Dr. Lam Man Kee.

Numerous activities were carried out in this program, such as campus tour in Sojo University, 9th SOJO-UTP Seminar, advanced analytical instruments training, industrial visit and city tour to Dazaifu Tenman-gū and Kyushu National Museum. In a nutshell, this 7-day program that embedded various research elements and Japanese cultural activities has stimulated new learning experiences to all postgraduate students who participated. In addition to technical experiences, better understanding on the unique Japanese cultures and lifestyles (e.g. be polite, respectful and considerate to others, importance of cleanliness etc.) was also imparted to the students.
