Caversham Primary School Principal’s Report to P&C
Nicole Anderson
Date: 13/5/26
Introduction
Current Acting Principal for CPS while the process is running.
I am in my sixth year of substantive principal of Boyare Primary School, which was a finalist in the WA Education Awards 2025 for Excellence in School Leadership. We were acknowledged for our transformative journey that has resulted in high academic achievement - outstanding teaching and learning results in NAPLAN five years in a row, excellent wellbeing and positive behaviour support initiatives, resulting in no suspensions, and attendance outcomes better than state averages.
I am pleased to provide the following update on school operations, student progress, and key initiatives.
Teaching and Learning
Staff are actively reviewing current practices through the reorganisation of committees, undertaking stocktakes of programs, and auditing resources and data to ensure alignment and effectiveness. There is currently a high variance in classrooms.
Differentiation remains a key focus in addressing the diverse needs of our students, including those requiring targeted intervention. We are aligning disability resourcing to ensure effective support for both diagnosed and imputed students. Targeted remedial learning in reading and mathematics will commence in Week 6 to support students requiring additional intervention.
Looking ahead, I am interested in introducing extension learning opportunities, building on proven approaches from other schools, to further enhance student outcomes and ensure all learners are achieving their potential.
Staff are engaged in a Common Staff Development Day on 29 May. PL includes:
· Aboriginal Perspectives in Teaching and Learning
· Cultural Responsiveness: Bias, Discrimination and Anti-racism
· Trauma Informed Practice
· Working with Students with ADHD/ASD
· Working with EAL/D-CAL/D Students and Families
· Maths Games for Building Basic Facts Fluency
· PBS in Practice
· Collaborative Teams and Action Learning Cycles
· Using DIEBLS Oral Reading Fluency Data to Inform Literacy Instruction
· Planning for Community Engagement Activities
Schools included: West Beechboro, Beechboro, Woodbridge, Herne Hill, Guildford, Caversham Valley, Greenmount, Bassendean, Lockridge, Kiara College, Eden Hill & Ashfield.
Student Wellbeing
Student wellbeing remains a priority. Whole-school approaches continue to support positive behaviour, engagement, and attendance. Staff maintain a consistent focus on creating safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments for all students. The PBS team is currently reviewing current practices to identify opportunities for improvement and to further strengthen our whole-school approach.
I am interested in introducing a whole-school reward program and a social emotional (trauma informed) program that supports all students, including our neuro divergent students. Explicit teaching of expected behaviour and inclusive practices are necessary for a school to thrive.
Community Engagement
We value the ongoing support of our school community. Communication with families continues through regular updates and engagement opportunities. We appreciate the role of the P&C in supporting school initiatives. I was impressed with the Mother’s Day stall and have coordinated two ‘Meet the Principal’ mornings (next two Fridays) to gain a deeper perspective on what families want. I would love more community events!
Resourcing
After speaking to staff and students, I am investigating the purchase of additional ICT (ipads etc) to support teaching and learning and a sensory space.
Thank you, Nicole
