Zero-to-One Non-Profit Execution: Architecting Canada’s Premier Collegiate Engineering Event
Project: Formula North - Canada's Formula Student Competition | Role: President & Co-Founder | Location: Ontario, Canada | Timeline: 2010 – 2018
Co-founded and launched a non-profit organization - Formula North Inc. - to build, organize, and execute Canada’s inaugural Formula Student competition, Formula North. Over seven years, the platform grew from a bootstrapped idea into an internationally recognized event, hosting up to 41 university teams annually across Combustion, Hybrid, and Electric vehicle classes, before successfully transferring brand naming rights to SAE International.
Zero Initial Infrastructure: No existing framework, regional precedent, or established funding channels for a Formula Student event in Canada.
Capital Risk: High upfront venue and equipment costs with minimal initial sponsorship support.
First-Time Entrepreneurship & Venue Friction: As co-founders, we possessed undergraduate event leadership experience but lacked formal corporate event track records; this initial lack of enterprise credibility created hesitation among major venue operators to commit facilities.
Market Dominance & Brand Trust: The legacy Formula SAE ecosystem held a dominant market share in North America, primarily across the USA; establishing brand trust and attracting established collegiate teams to a new Canadian platform required overcoming entrenched market loyalty.
Liability & Competitive Resistance: Navigating personal financial liability while countering competitive friction and market skepticism from established US industry players.
Financial Risk Management: Absorbed initial financial uncertainty by voluntarily deploying $18,500 CAD in personal capital to cover year-one venue shortfalls; engineered a lean B2B corporate sponsorship model post-deployment that fully recouped the personal investment within 24 months while reinvesting all surplus revenue into event improvements.
Venue Lockdown: Leveraged political and regional networks to secure the primary competition venue - Barrie Molson Center.
Safety & Regulatory Governance: Implemented stringent safety protocols and technical inspection standards across all vehicle classes as the non-negotiable operational priority.
Brand Culture & Open Transparency: Promoted the event atmosphere after Formula Student Germany, fostering an approachable, laid-back, and transparent environment between leadership and university teams that established immediate participant trust.
Participant-First Infrastructure (Indoor Pits): Designed and executed indoor paddock facilities, providing accessible, weather-protected pit spaces and storage for teams lacking outdoor setup budgets, significantly enhancing comfort for students and volunteers alike.
Volunteer Team Development: Original volunteer team built through personal networks and word-of-mouth. Only 15% of team had prior Formula Student background.
Global Ecosystem Recognition: Strategically aligned event operations with international standards, successfully earning official entry into the global Formula Student World Rankings operated by FSG by 2015.
Community Footprint: Scaled live visitor attendance by 140% via targeted social media marketing campaigns and local media coverage.
Vendor Network & Facility Retention: Cultivated deep vendor trust during the inaugural event, leading the facility to lock in reserved dates for the platform annually.
Volunteer Loyalty & Word-of-Mouth Scaling: Built an exceptionally loyal volunteer engine, retaining core team members for 5+ consecutive years and expanding recruitment beyond traditional collegiate circles.
Strategic Brand Exit: Governed the non-profit model wind-down and asset liquidation, negotiating a successful brand and naming rights transfer to SAE International by 2018.
