Cross-Border Expansion & Crisis Turnaround: Building India’s Premier Engineering Platform
Project: Formula Bharat - India's Formula Student Competition | Role: CEO & Director | Location: India | Timeline: 2016 – 2025
Recruited to establish and launch the Formula Bharat competition and its parent organization in India. Navigated extreme cultural, regulatory, and business ambiguity to build an international competition framework from scratch. Subsequently led an operational pivot that expanded the student platform network from 800 to 14,000+ active users, culminating in an annual $250K operating budget and a successful founder exit in 2025.
Cultural & Regulatory Ambiguity: Moving to India with no pre-existing business infrastructure or local roots; navigating unfamiliar regulatory standards, corporate setups, and accounting frameworks.
High-Friction Supplier Negotiation: Securing venues across multiple cities and negotiating supplier pricing within traditional, male-dominated industrial environments.
Ecosystem Crisis: Co-founding a new entity in response to an abrupt local event failure to restore community and sponsor trust.
Revenue Volatility: Overcoming an event-driven cash-flow model that relied on unpredictable corporate sponsorships and seasonal student fees.
Zero-to-One Legal & Operational Setup: Independently registered the corporate entity, established localized accounting workflows, and built vendor networks across multiple cities under budget.
Community-Led Expansion: Recruited local engineering alumni to bridge cultural gaps and establish a reliable volunteer network of over 200 technical and administrative professionals.
Subscription Business Model Shift: Re-engineered the platform from a single transactional competition into a year-round membership model. Introduced gamified milestones, technical research submissions, job placement pipelines, and discounted university chapter bulk registrations.
Digital Merchandise Expansion: Launched an online e-commerce brand (Circuit Swag) via Shopify to diversify income, scaling sales from $500 to $4,000 within two years.
Network Scale: Expanded the active user database from 800 to 14,000+ students and industry stakeholders globally.
Predictable Financial Runway: Shifted revenue capture to the start of the season through bulk chapter registrations, de-risking the business from sponsor volatility and securing a stable $250K annual budget.
World Ranking & Legacy: Established Formula Bharat as an officially ranked Formula Student event in 2018, competing directly against entrenched legacy giants purely through community trust and word-of-mouth.
Founder Exit: Executed a seamless succession and sale strategy in 2025, transferring full ownership to former long-term employees.
