What is Information Literacy?
According to Rohatgi et al. (2016), computer and information literacy are interwoven and can be described as learners' achievement with technology in various contexts. The text further describes computer and information literacy as an “individual's ability to use computers to investigate, create, and communicate in order to participate effectively at home, at school, in the workplace, and in society”. This definition adds on to the broader concept of ICT literacy and specifically aims at dealing with digital information.
The importance of Information Literacy
It is important to be information literate so that one cannot receive false information, believe it, and share it with others. By sharing false information, others may be influenced and also feel obliged to share this information. This information then spreads among many individuals and may cause confusion and conflict. Once an individual is information literate, it is likely that they will not easily share false information. Instead, they will share true and relevant information if possible. This has a positive impact on themselves and the digital society at large. It is therefore imperative for individuals to strive to become information literate.
