Every year Mater Dei puts on a musical just for the seniors and allocates a budget for costume rentals. I was in charge of the costumes for The Little Mermaid, but when some of the rentals arrived they weren't quite what was needed. This allowed me to get creative and add my own personal flair.
Ariel
Originally, the plan for Ariel's costume was to rent it like all of the sea creatures costumes. Once I saw the costume that had been provided however, I decided to go a different way. I wanted Ariel's costume to be bright and fun like the character, so I found a bright purple corset and a sparkly mermaid style skirt. I also added pearl beading to the corset to add something extra. Ariel's Kiss the Girl costume was created by thrifting a blue skirt, a black corset/vest, and a blue shirt. I also made a matching bow to top it off.
Ursula
Instead of Ursula's rented costume, we used a quinceañera dress that was perfect for the character. We did not have any tentacles for her though, so I made some using an old belt, wire hangers, black fabric, stuffing, and mesh sparkle ribbon.
Mersisters
I wanted the mersisters to have a very similar costume to Ariel, just slightly simpler and in different colors. I chose bright colors for the corsets, and for the tails, I used the same style as Ariel's, but in blue. Since we were not able to get the corsets in the actresses' correct sizes, I tailored each one to their individual fit.
