The evaluations and data presented below are from all sections of The Life Cycle I have taught. Four sections of this class were in person (Fall 2023-Fall 2024) and two sections were online (Spring and Summer 2023). Data from a mid-semester feedback survey administered to students after the first exam is also displayed below. This is something I began implementing when I started teaching in person.
A strong measure of teaching performance is comparing instructor ratings to averages in the department and university. The graph to the left illustrates my teaching evaluations compared to department and university averages across all domains in Spring, Summer, and Fall 2024.
After the first exam, students complete an anonymous course survey to assess the questions on the exam, how they prepared, and how they feel the course is going overall. This helps me gauge the learning style of each class rather than getting feedback at the end of the semester and applying it to an entirely different cohort.
"She is amazing at engaging most students in a large lecture and truly changed her style based on mid course feedback" - student from Spring 2024
"When we asked for more videos throughout the lecture, she made sure to include more." - student from Spring 2024
Some of my sections have almost 200 students which can make it difficult to connect with each person. As part of their first day attendance, students have the option to submit a picture of their pet to be featured in the lecture slides. While I mainly do this as a fun way to engage with my students, some say this helped them with attendance throughout the semester!
"Pets of the day is also such a fun way to start class. Honestly, on days I didn't want to go, I went anyways just to see if my pet was up there so definitely kept me personally engaged!" - student from Spring 2024
Creating a classroom where students feel comfortable asking questions is very important to me. Below are some comments from students in my Fall 2024 class:
"I know I could ask her any question and she will do her best to help without making me feel stupid or unimportant."
"Very enthusiastic and wants to explain material to students when asked questions."
"Always helpful with questions or concerns in or out of class."
"She always made me feel comfortable enough to ask questions."
The greatest compliment an educator can receive is when students mention you have truly helped them learn. Below is what students from past semesters have said:
"She explained things very well and related many topics to real life scenarios." student from Fall 2023
"Wonderful teaching methods and the ability to go further in depth than the textbook provided an amazing learning experience." - student from Summer 2024
"When [I was] confused she would come up with good examples when explaining a difficult concept." - student from Fall 2024
"...if a topic was misunderstood, she would go through said topic and help them through." - student from Fall 2024
I want my students to know how much I care about them by actively listening to their questions and concerns. To the left is a word-cloud displaying the most common words from the USF course evaluations like 'cares' and 'understanding'. Here are what some students have said:
"She truly cares about her students and you can tell by the way she greets us, teaches us, opens our minds, and then gives us a farewell." - student from Fall 2024
"Cassidy also clearly cares for her students and wants them to be successful while also treating them as equals." - student from Fall 2024
"[She] cared about the wellbeing of her students while being professional." - student from Fall 2024
I have greatly improved as an instructor over the past 6 semesters. I believe that both teaching in person along with utilizing a mid-semester survey have contributed to my improved instructor ratings. This data to the right comes from the official USF student evaluation survey.
