Artist Statement

“ I look at the reality of every day life. The reality of a specific place seen through the structural element of it’s society. The structure of the surroundings they live in, the walls they live in, it’s place of origin, it’s symbolic heritage. I depict the imaginary guidelines within a culture based of it’s visual language; the ornamental esthetics of its surroundings. The imaginary distinctions of a society. I paint the architecture of society “. 

Casper Strietman investigates how architecture functions as a vessel of collective memory, power structures, and symbolic codes. His practice centers on figurative oil painting, often rooted in monumental or transitional urban environments. Working site-responsively, he captures the intersection between the visible surface of buildings and their embedded political or cultural narratives.

Focusing on public and governmental spaces, Strietman draws attention to ornamental details, historical residue, and their contemporary reappropriations. His visual language is both documentary and interpretive —observing how urban structures reflect shifts in identity, governance, and the performance of space. Recent research has taken place across diverse socio-political landscapes, from the lingering imperial echoes of New York and the authoritarian symbolism of Minsk, to the layered historical strata of Naples and Siracusa. Each site becomes a frame through which Casper explores the "architecture of reality": the everyday structures that shape, suppress, or reveal societal dynamics.

Strietman studied Fine Art at AKV | St. Joost (Breda, NL), graduating in 2015. He continues to work between residencies and his home base in Amsterdam.
