Separation and Vortex Dynamics

Wake region behind high angle of attack slender bodies sustain vortex-dominated flows. Streamwise evolution of these vortices, their instabilities and asymmetry are critical to predicting and controlling trajectory and aerodynamic loading of the vehicle.

Laminar separation bubbles over airfoils drive the boundary/shear layer dynamics over the suction surface. The long/short bubble has significant impact on flow type and lifting characteristics of the airfoil.
