The Canadian Association for the Study of Indigenous Education (CASIE/ACÉÉA), as an associate member in the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE/SCÉÉ), has the responsibility for providing forums for scholarly discussion related to Indigenous education within CSSE, within Canadian Faculties of Education, and in society at large. The Association’s mission is to promote the study of Indigenous education among faculty members, students, and others in Canada. As an organization committed to promoting Indigenous peoples and education, we offer an annual award to support an Indigenous graduate student to attend the annual CSSE/SCÉÉ conference to share their work with CASIE/ACÉÉA.
Applicants for this award must be a current member of CASIE/ACÉÉA, must have current graduate student status or have graduated less than one year from the date of the award, and must have an accepted submission for the 2025 CASIE/ACÉÉA conference.
In order to move forward to adjudication, applications must include the following:
a statement of Indigenous identity (citizenship, relationship, kinship) naming Indigenous communities or groups you are connected to and who claim you;
Signed reference form (provided via CASIE ListServ) from an Indigenous community or group member
Signed reference form (provided via CASIE ListServ) from a faculty member who can serve as a reference
a copy of the presentation proposal you submitted for the 2025 CASIE/ACÉÉA conference; and
a brief statement about why you are seeking consideration for this award (if multiple eligible submissions are received, the award will be adjudicated based on individual need).
Send complete applications by email to Jennifer MacDonald (jennifer.macdonald@uregina.ca)with “CASIE Graduate Student Award” in the subject by March 12th, 2025. Once applications have been received, the executive committee of CASIE/ACÉÉA will read and adjudicate the nominations. (In the event of any conflicts of interest, committee members will recuse themselves.)
Recipient(s) will be recognized at the annual CASIE/ACÉÉA annual general meeting and will be sent a prize to support Congress costs. (Prize amounts in the range of $100-500 will be determined depending on the applicant pool and funds available.) Recipients will also be highlighted on the CASIE/ACÉÉA website. Nominees for this award will also be forwarded for automatic consideration for a Congress Graduate Merit Award (CGMA).

2024 Award Call
Jessica Madiratta is a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Education at the University of Regina. Her research explores teacher professional development in culturally responsive teaching. Jessica completed her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction at the University of Regina. She has completed a B.A. with a major in Indigenous Studies at First Nations University of Canada and a B.Ed. at SUNTEP (Saskatchewan Urban Native Teacher Education Program). Jessica works as an Indigenous Advocate teacher and has 14 years of teaching experience.
