There are well over a decade's worth of mutually incompatible instructions for setting up basic pinyin input on previous versions of Ubuntu. People make lots of claims about needing to do now obsolete rubbish, which means that many people (including me) end up spending many hours only to end up with a broken install.

You should now have a little "en" (or whatever the language code of your Ubuntu install is) at the top right of your main screen which you can click on and get a list of available input methods, including Chinese (Intelligent pinyin). Open anything that can receive text (like gedit, openoffice, vim, FF,...) and try it out. You can also change between them with Super/Win + space.

If you don't need extra bells and whistles then do NOT bother with fcitx (and the supposedly excellent "google pinyin"), uim or any other exotic option! They are extremely hit-and-miss trying to install, and finding a guide that is relevant to 22.04 is almost impossible. Some claim to have "tested with 22.04" but they have done upgrades of previous versions that they had working, not fresh installs.

The default Chinese Pinyin IME installed in Ubuntu desktop settings -> keyboard -> input source is Intelligent Pinyin for IBus (ibus-libpinyin). It works, but not very well, especially when mixing Chinese and English input. After suffering with it for several months, I switched to Fcitx5 and feel much better.

This method is through command line. It relies on installing ibus-libpinyin (which is known as Ibus Intelligent Pinyin) and adding it as input source to gsettings schema. This has been tested multiple times on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS as well as 15.04

The command above takes output of gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.input-sources sources, gives it to sed, which removes the last square bracket and appends , ('ibus', 'libpinyin')] to its output. That particular schema has entries in format [(INPUTMETHOD1, LANGUAGE1), (INPUTMETHOD1,LANGUAGE2)], so this is the reason why sed has to be used to insert text in that fassion. Finally we use output of that as input for gsettings set command, through parameter substitution with $( . . . )

Hope that helps other users! Chinese language by itself is great for web-surfing Chinese internet, but one of the most desired app for Chinese users of Linux is QQ, which of course isn't available, however check out my other answer on how to install Android version of QQ in Ubuntu.

I use a Laptop with TuxedoOS, that builds on top on Budgie. I want to be write Chinese, that I use regularly, at least once a week.

I did it wvia the region and language setting, using ibus. Than I added intelligent pinyin.

As to input methods - I cannot answer your question directly other than to make you aware there are two input methods - ibus and fcitx. By default ibus is used by GNOME/Budgie. You can also install the fcitx packages if that works better for you.

Hi

I want to set up so I can type in Chinese mandarin in pinyin.

How should I set it up so I can change between languages between

Swedish, Danish and Chinese Mandarin Simplified or traditional?

Arrange the preferences of the Input Method to your liking and you are good to go with Pinyin typing of Simplified Mandarin. Then you can change your input methods with the key combination you have set.

Sogou pinyin for linux is joint development by Sogou Inc. and UbuntuKylin. The version took one and a half years to development. Add new support wubi input method and symbolic feature. We make adaptation and fix bugs on UbuntuKylin 19.04 and UbuntuKylin 19.10. Currently, Sogou for linux running in UbuntuKylin have same effect comparison with windows native.

Inputting Chinese on the English Ubuntu system is not news. Ubuntu uses IBus keyboard input method system by default and there is a Chinese input method ibus-pinyin which could be easily installed via sudo apt-get install ibus-pinyin. However, when it comes to gaming, especially in the full-screen mode, ibus-pinyin will not show any word selection menu in the game, because it is in the IBus system and IBus system is not compatible with most of the gaming engines.

To support Chinese input in Ubuntu games, in this blog post, I will introduce how to install fcitx based input methods, which is compatible with games, on Ubuntu. It should also be noted that this method might also apply to the input methods from other languages.

Reboot the computer and we would see a new input icon at the top right corner of our desktop. We then add Google Pinyin to the fcitx method. We start the fcitx-configtool by running the following command in the terminal.

Ubuntu Kylin (Chinese: ; pinyin: Yu Qln) is the official Chinese version of the Ubuntu computer operating system. It is intended for desktop and laptop computers,[8] and has been described as a "loose continuation of the Chinese Kylin OS".[9] In 2013, Canonical Ltd. reached an agreement with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to co-create and release an Ubuntu-based operating system with features targeted at the Chinese market.[10]

The first official release, Ubuntu Kylin 13.04, was released on 25 April 2013, on the same day as Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail). Features include Chinese input methods, Chinese calendars, a weather indicator, and online music search from the Dash.[11]

The team cooperates with Sogou to develop Sogou Input Method for Linux. Since it is closed source, it is not included in the official Ubuntu Kylin image, but users can download it from UKSC or Sogou's website.

WPS Office, also closed-source, is the default office suite in the pro and enhanced editions. LibreOffice however is used mainly as default in the official vanilla Ubuntu Kylin image from the main Ubuntu server website[13] without WPS Office installed.

Recently it was brought to my attention that there seems to be some sort of bug in the keyboard layout shortcut handling for some layouts. There could be a similar bug with fcitx, but as it has a broader scope than LXQt (only a few distros use LXQt but LOTS, all with different desktop environments, use fcitx), I think the likelihood is much less. One thing you might want to do is only use the system tray icon to switch because then you eliminate any likelihood of shortcut conflicts.

I reinstalled Lubuntu 20.04 while on my break, updated it, and then installed the aforementioned fcitx packages, but did NOT install Sogou this time. I then configured fcitx and rebooted. Problem solved!

That will take you to a page with further instructions while at the same time downloading the Debian package. Save the package rather than installing it. At time of writing that will get you sogoupinyin_2.4.0.2942_amd64.deb (and FWIW the URL is here).

Seems that it is quite unstable to use fcitx on Ubuntu 18.04, even after all the settings. I still occasionally encounter the missing candidate problem. The best solution I found is to purge fcitx* and use ibus-pinyin.

Ubuntu 19.04. If I only install "Chinese (Intelligent Pinyin)", after pressing 'super+space' input is switched to Pinyin (can be seen from the icon on system bar). However it still input English directly. Even if I tried 'shift' button it's still the same.
