"FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PEOPLE OF WILMINGTON"
Sarah D.J. Carter, a lifelong resident of the Town of Wilmington, Massachusetts, generously donated $6,000 upon her death in 1907 to the Town of Wilmington; her will stated the endowment fund is to be used in perpetuity “...in trust to invest the principal sum, and to expend the income in maintaining courses of lectures for the benefit of the people of Wilmington.” The Sarah D.J. Carter Lecture Committee was formed to create and schedule these programs. The first event, an illustrated lecture on Old England & Ireland, was held on October 28, 1910.
