Buying a car can be exciting but before you buy one and drive it away there are a few things you need to know first you..
You Will need to complete a vehicle pre-purchase check this can be done by contacting the personal property securities. register or the PPS are details of how to contact the PPS are are on the Vic Roads website
You can go directly to www.ppsr.gov.au to do a search on PPS are you'll need the vehicle identification number fees will apply so have your credit card details handy the PPS.
This certificate will tell you the car's registration and finance details and also if it's been written off or reported as stolen now when you buy a car.
It will either be registered or unregistered let's start with what to do when buying a registered car.
If I'm buying a registered car I have to transfer the registration into my name. Here's how I do it first I ask the seller for a valid certificate of road worthiness. This certificate means the car has been tested to make sure it's safe to drive.
Next I get a signed and data receipt from the seller. I need to check that the receipt includes the card details such as the vehicle identification number and model.
It must also clearly show the sellers name and address plus my details as the buyer. Then I complete an application for the transfer of registration form. I can download this form from the website or I can pick one up at VicRoads.
I need to make sure that the seller's details are completed on this form there's also a fee to pay fees are listed on the website finally to complete the transfer.
I submit the documents and fees to VicRoads within 14 days of buying the car. Okay now let's deal with what I have to do if...
I buy an unregistered car first I ask the seller for a receipt and keep this as proof of purchase and ownership again. I check to see it includes the cars details such as the vehicle identification number and model.
It must also clearly show the sellers name and address as well as my details remember I'm the buyer. Next I need an unregistered vehicle permit. This is so I can legally drive an unregistered car on public roads an unregistered vehicle permit lasts for 28 days.
I'm only allowed to drive the car between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. to have repairs done and to obtain a certificate of road worthiness to buy a permit. I can call VicRoads or visit a customer service centre.
Finally I must make an appointment at VicRoads and take my car in to be inspected as well as my car. I'll need to bring evidence of identity documents proof of ownership and a current certificate of road worthiness.
This is when I also have to pay my registration fees which would include my registration number plate motor vehicle Judy and TAC charge. Once that's done the car is ready to be driven on the road for more information visit the website happy motoring you.
