The perspective shift from viewing cars merely as tools for transportation to recognizing them as active social agents that can influence and are influenced by humans generates a higher level of complexity than previously considered. The second edition of the Cars as Social Agents (CarSA) workshop series explores the intricate dynamics of introducing autonomous vehicles (AVs) into shared spaces and established social systems, where members of various social communities – such as residents rushing to work, tourists strolling around, and workers cleaning the streets – are already present.
The half-day workshop encompasses interactive presentations with subsequent interdisciplinary discussions, as well as a keynote held by Wendy Ju (Cornell Tech) on the topic of challenges involved in deploying robots in public settings. Participants will have the opportunity to share their research findings, practical experiences, and insights related to the benefits, risks, and design challenges associated with integrating AVs into our daily lives
Note: The first edition of the CarSA workshop series was held as part of the 2023 International Conference on Human–Agent Interaction (HAI) (see https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3623809.3623979)
