We would like to invite you to our half-day workshop held in conjunction with the 13th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction (NordiCHI 2024) in Uppsala on October 13th, 2024.
The perspective shift from viewing cars merely as tools for transportation to recognizing them as active social agents that can influence and are influenced by humans generates a higher level of complexity than previously considered. The second edition of the Cars as Social Agents (CarSA) workshop [https://sites.google.com/view/carsa24/] explores the intricate dynamics of introducing autonomous vehicles (AVs) into shared spaces and established social systems, where members of various social communities are already present, including residents rushing to work, tourists strolling around, and workers cleaning the streets. The workshop aims to discuss the benefits, risks, and design challenges associated with integrating AVs into our daily lives.
We invite contributions from researchers and practitioners in areas such as human-agent interaction (HAI), human-computer interaction (HCI), human-vehicle interaction (HVI), human-robot interaction (HRI), ethics and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI).
Topics for this workshop include (but are not limited to):
Perspectives on AVs of various members of the street, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, tourists, and workers in public spaces.
Social agency attribution to AVs and its impact on trust and cooperation.
Human-vehicle interaction enhancement through, for example, eHMIs or safety campaigns.
Power dynamics in shared spaces to promote safe interactions between humans and AVs.
Explainable AI that addresses safety and trust concerns in AV decision-making.
Challenges of transitioning between automation levels in AVs, focusing on mode confusions and mixed-agency scenarios.
