Process

Green Ware

"Green ware" is the term for clay that has not been fired yet. This is the first stage in the creation process were the raw clay is transformed into something new. It can be thrown on a wheel or rolled into thin slabs that can then be printed on, shaped, and/or joined together. Handles are made and put on, surfaces are trimmed and smoothed, and any holes in the clay need to completed during this stage. The images here some some examples of this stage.

Bisque Ware

Bisque-ware is the term for ceramic wares that have been bisque—fired which is the first firing of the process at a lower temperature. This first firing removes most of the water from the clay leaving a sturdier material that can then be used as-is for decorative pieces or, glaze can be applied at this stage to then fire again for food-safe pieces or if a more durable end-state is desired.

Glazed Ware

Glazed-ware is what is traditionally seen as finished "ceramic" pieces. They have been fired a second time to a higher temperature that melts the glaze and hardens the piece even further. Depending on the glaze or treatment applied before firing a wonderful variety of colors and textures can be accomplished.
