Are you excited to teach coding but struggle with effective ways to deliver the content? Are you curious about how to help your students make the transition from block-based to text-based languages? Join this session to explore tools, strategies, and resources to help you teach computer science effectively!
This session will address three of the ISTE Standards for Educators, including the strands for educators as learners, designers, and facilitators. As learners who continually seek to improve their practice, attendees of this session will explore a number of pedagogical approaches for teaching computer science. Through awareness of these teaching methods, participants will become empowered to design appropriate and effective learning environments. Lastly, as facilitators, teachers will be able to guide students through their journeys as computational thinkers.
As districts, schools and teachers have embraced the inclusion of computer science education at the elementary and middle school levels, many technology teachers have found themselves in newfound roles as computer science teachers. This can be both exciting and daunting as educators may now be tasked to not only learn new content but to also discover the best methods for teaching computing. The purpose of this presentation is to share my journey, including both the successes and the lessons I have learned in teaching computer science to MS students.
The goal of this session is to empower other teachers to teach computer science in engaging and effective ways. Participants will walk away with a plethora of strategies, tools, and resources to take back to their own classrooms. These will include unplugged activities, digital tools, books, games, and activities in support of effectively teaching introductory computer science.
