High Point University
DIS 1000: Comedy, Culture, and Why We Laugh (formerly FYS 1000: Theories of Comedy). Students are placed into first year seminar classes offered by faculty teaching in their areas of expertise (DIS). I teach this course as a sort of introduction to Philosophy of Humor. I redesigned this course for the new general education curriculum.
I have also taught this course as part of the Learning Community (LC) program. LCs are designed so that first year students have two classes that are paired together; this means that they have the same students in both classes. The purpose is to encourage students to engage with one another outside the classroom and facilitate relationships. An event for students in each LC is organized by the faculty member.
PHL 1001: Introduction to Philosophy. A window into the interesting world of philosophy; general education course
PHL 2008: Contemporary Moral Problems. Introduction to the four main moral theories and application to modern moral problems; general education course.
PHL 2043: Business Ethics. Introduction to the four main moral theories and application to the real business world; general education course. I also teach this as part of the Learning Community program (see above).
HNR 3608: Death. Exploratory course designed to promote introspection. We begin with emotional responses to and attitudes toward death. We move into conceptions of the self and conclude with conceptions and definitions of death. These three sections provide students with opportunities to make their own connections. This course is exclusive to the Honors Scholars Program.
PHIL 3026: Philosophy of Disability. I created this course to This course explores the history of disability, models of disability, the myriad ways disability shapes identity in society, and what a genuinely inclusive society might look like.
As of Fall 2025, a course proposal for an Integrative Course (co-taught with another faculty member) is under review; and, I am currently developing another course to submit next academic year.
