A quick personal review:
I finally read this book - after I retired. I should have read it when it first came out, but I doubt that it would have changed much of what I did. I do believe it would have affirmed my choices as a reading teacher! I love all that this book teaches!
Kittle is a reader, and she says that teachers of reading need to be readers too. She believes in student choice because that is what will hook readers. She doesn’t believe that students hate to read. She believes they simply have not yet found the right book, and the teacher’s job is to help those students find those right books. She promotes a culture of reading and tells stories from her own classroom to demonstrate how to build this culture. Her passion for reading comes through the text and through to her students.
Unique qualities:
First person narrative occurs in sections of the book as students tell their stories about finding a love of reading.
Red flags:
None
Recommendations:
Every teacher of reading needs to read this book.
