Instrument Families

The instruments of the orchestra are divided into 4 groups: Percussion, Strings, Brass and Woodwinds.

Have a look at this video which is a great overview of the Orchestra:

The Woodwind Family includes the clarinet, saxophone,  flute, and bassoon. The recorder and kazoo are also part of this family!

Watch the following video to learn more:

The Percussion Family includes all instruments that we shake, hit, or strike with a mallet. Most of them are rhythm instruments, like bells, drums, maracas, and triangles. Some percussion instruments can make melodies too, like the xylophone!

The String Family includes all instruments with strings. You play them by plucking, strumming or bowing them. When the string vibrates, it makes a sound!

The Brass Family includes trumpet, tuba, french horn and cornet. These instruments have a mouthpiece that the player "buzzes" into to make the sound. There are valves to press to change the sounds, but the player also changes the shape of their mouth to make various pitches.

Here's a great video recap of all the instrument families!
