Teaching

Teaching Experience:

Adjunct Professor, 2019-2021, Santa Fe College

    • I developed and taught ISC1006 Wide World of Science at Santa Fe College. This was a new, National Science Foundation Grant Funded Course aimed at broadening participation in science, technology, engineering, and math by using high-interest project based learning activities to encourage under represented students to study STEAM coursework and pursue STEM careers. I taught entry-level STEAM skills through the project of building an electric guitar over the course of each semester.

Gainesville Girls Rock Camp, 2013-2019, Gainesville Florida

    • I co-founded and directed a 501c3 nonprofit, Gainesville Girls Rock Camp, that uses music and performance to encourage self-esteem and creative self-expression in girls and gender-expansive youth.

    • I designed summer camp curriculum that combines music, creativity, empowerment, history, and consciousness raising. The program served 9-17 year-olds. I served as program and volunteer director, taught workshops, taught group instrument instruction, and led assembly activities. I have taught over 275 9-17 year-olds at this program over 7 summers.

    • I also designed and facilitated annual volunteer trainings for our volunteer staff of 40-50 individuals. These were active-learning trainings that focus on non-violent communication, positive youth development, engaged teaching skills, conflict management, and program logistics. I have taught this training to nearly 250 adult volunteers.

Graduate Assistant, 2016-2018, University of Florida

    • I served as a graduate teaching and research assistant during my time in the Family, Youth, and Community Sciences Master's program at the University of Florida. I was responsible for assisting in preparing and grading course activities, serving as a tutor and mentor for students, assisting various faculty members in research, dissemination, and publishing, and leading class activities or substituting for traveling professors. I assisted the following courses: Program Planning & Evaluation (3 semesters), Nonprofit Leadership (2 semesters), Human Resources (1 semester), Adolescent Problem Behavior (1 semester), and Contemporary Family Problems (1 semester).

Artist and Upcycler Workshop Series, 2015-2016, The Repurpose Project

    • I designed a curriculum of workshops aimed to reduce waste by teaching people how to fix broken items, upcycle worn articles and repurpose common objects into new and interesting creations to reduce waste sent to the landfill. This was a 14 class series that took place in the Winter and Spring of 2015-'16, featuring 14 artisan instructors and over 60 attendees. Workshop topics included power tool literacy for women, sewing courses, soldering, stained glass, mosaics, and art from e-waste, among other themes.

Private Music Lessons Instructor, 2012-2013, Studio Percussion

    • I taught private music lessons on a variety of instruments including guitar, mandolin, ukulele, trumpet, and banjo as a professional instructor at a local non-profit music school, Studio Percussion. I designed individual music curricula based on each student's ability, interest and learning style, and created and printed visual resources and materials to enhance students' understanding of the lesson content. I taught an average of ten students per week.

Faces of the Homeless Speakers' Bureau, 2009-2010, National Coalition for the Homeless

    • I assembled and coordinated a speakers' bureau that traveled regionally, giving presentations to raise awareness about homelessness and addressing hate crimes against the homeless. With a panel of individuals who had experienced homelessness, I traveled to schools, churches, clubs, and various organizations to educate the public about homelessness and to offer facts and lived experience to correct prevalent misinformation about the causes and realities of homelessness.
