Broadcast Journalism
Broadcast Journalism
As a student at Holbrook Middle-High School I served as one of the Executive Producers of our school’s broadcast program, Code Blue News. Joining the program at the beginning of my junior year, I had no idea I would grow as much as I have.
Sitting in front of a camera for the first time, I thought I didn’t have what it takes to be a good reporter, but my peers saw something in me that took me to greater heights. I have become a regular and reliable anchor as well as an on-camera reporter for our program, winning many awards for my ability to tell the story.
A story's impact on the community is sometimes unclear while it is still in the works. Looking back on past work, I've realized that finding stories and giving them a voice makes much more of a difference than just throwing information at an audience. There are always stories waiting to be seen and heard, and it is our job to capture them and spread awareness to a community that will be able to recognize accomplishments, take action on issues both locally and worldwide, and overall be aware of all the great things happening around them.
Becoming a journalist and engulfing myself in the world of storytelling has opened my eyes to a whole new world that I had never been a part of. Now, knowing the impact I am capable of making, I love the work and opportunities I have been granted that may not have been available to me in the past. The world would not be the same without storytellers, no matter what platform they use to tell their stories. However, seeing it on the screen allows me to be in another person's shoes and see the world through their eyes. I am so grateful to have been introduced to this work, and I do not believe my life would be the same without my growth in storytelling.
Most storytellers find themselves drawn to their passion through pen and paper but I believe that wielding the tool of modern technology opens people’s eyes to a completely different perspective. Pursuing my passion for broadcasting, I have completed various stories in order to spread awareness for certain topics and make a difference in the community.
2024-2025
Family is Everything
This story was filmed during a Human Interest Feature Story contest during the 2025 Student Television Network Convention in Tampa Bay, Florida. The prompt was "Family is Everything" and we had 6 hours to write, film and edit a feature story based on the prompt. While we were driving through Ybor City, we saw a sign that said "1905 Family of Restaurants" and knew that it would be the perfect story. I wrote, reported and coedited this story, which ended up being awarded first place.
Long Road Ahead
During practice for the STN convention, we were given a prompt by our program advisor. Similar to the national contests, we were given 5 hours to film and edit a story based on the given prompt. We travelled to a local gym looking for a story and found Parish, a man who was on his own fitness journey and gave us the perfect narrative for our story.
Losing Early College
Being asked by the Superintendent of our school, I went into production of this story with a bit of nervousness. I knew it had to be moving and emotional while also including all of the facts. I normally tend to keep the number of interviews I use around 2 or 3 but faced a challenge in deciding who had more important information to use. In the end I came to the ultimate decision that each of them brought something to the story that could not be left out because it doesn't affect just one person but a whole community of people. I produced, wrote and reported this story to be shown to the Board of Education by our Superintendent.
Yondr Pouches
Going into my senior year, the school district decided to enforce a new phone policy. Yondr pouches were being introduced to the students and none of us were very happy with it. What teenage student would want to lock their phone in a pouch for an entire day? Knowing that the policy would be enforced anyways, I decided to have a more positive outlook. I wrote, filmed, reported and edited this story to allow students to see the benefits of the Yondr pouches and the damages of excessive phone use in teenage years in hopes that some of the negative reactions would be resolved.
Everyone's Love for Boston
Wanting to give broadcast students more opportunities to challenge themselves in their work, my program's advisor decided to host an event at Emerson College called the Fall Frenzy. At the beginning of the contest, we were given the prompt "Common Ground". Trying to take a different angle on the story, rather than going to Boston Common like everyone else my group looked at the city as a whole. Writing, reporting and filming this story, we sought the share the idea that the city of Boston is a common ground for anyone to find their place. For this, we were awarded gold standard and were the only group to receive this award.
Kindness 101
This year, in November, my school celebrated World Kindness Week by having the Kindness 101 club set up a table for third party compliments. The idea was sweet and it was a great story to cover. I wrote, reported and edited this story to share with the community how kids at HMHS are able to spread kindness in honor of World Kindness Week.
Winter Fest
The city of Boston has so many different ways of celebrating the holiday season. To showcase the winter spirit in the city, I went with of group of people from my crew to check out Winter Fest. It was a great experience with a lot of very friendly people who were enjoying their time at the event. I wrote and reported this story to share with the community and give the event some publicity.
Holbrook Cares
Going into a new season for my broadcast program, I was looking for a story to get us started. I was led to a candlelight vigil being held in honor of those who have suffered due to addiction and I found myself feeling a personal connection to. I found it extremely important to help spread this story and share the beauty of the vigil with the community. I may not have been on camera but I put my heart into the process of getting this story completed. I wrote, filmed, and edited this story to share with the school and the community.
Brookeville Bible Church Christmas
While the city celebrates Christmas every year, so do smaller communities such as the Brookville Bible Church. Wanting to spread awareness of the efforts of this church to make people feel welcomed during the holidays, we went and helped them to tell their story. While I was not on camera as the reporter I still wrote, filmed and edited this story.
New Music Teacher
I am a part of many different clubs and programs within the school and I have been all throughout my high school career. One of my main focuses has been towards the music program. My passion grew with m music teacher and director until she unfortunately had to leave. HMHS was introduced to a new music teacher but many had not met her yet. In order to introduce and all people to get to know her, I wrote, edited, filmed and reported this story to share with the school.
2023-2024
Miracles in the Making
This story was found and filmed during a Human Interest Feature Story contest at the 2024 STN Convention. The prompt was "miracles in the making" and we had 6 hours to write, film and edit a feature story based on the prompt. Seeing a dog adoption happening on a sidewalk in Long Beach, California, I knew it would be the perfect story. I wrote, reported and helped to edit this story, ultimately resulting in a third place award.
Spiking Stereotypes
Being a part of the volleyball team at my school, I found that there were a lot of stories in just that group itself. With no boys' team offered at HMHS, my friend Kyle only had two options. He would either have to give up the sport he loved or play alongside a team of girls. Finding his story intriguing, I produced and reported it to share with the community. It was submitted to STN for their fall nationals without my knowledge and was my first honorable mention award in our broadcast program.
Dove Relationships
With Valentines Day coming in hot, everyone was on the topic of relationships. Although most people only look for the beauty of them, there are still many signs and dangers to look out for. DOVE provides services to help spread awareness of domestic violence and abuse in relationships so that teenagers know what to do if something happens to them. Finding this important to share and spread awareness for, I wrote, reported, edited and filmed this story to allow the students to be acquainted with their resources if they found themselves in a time of need.
Dig Pink
This was one of the first stories I ever produced on my own. As I said before, the volleyball team at my school comes with a lot of great stories about character and community. During October the volleyball team got together to host an event called Dig Pink. This event was held as a fundraiser in order to raise money to donate to charities in support of breast cancer research. Although I was new to this form of storytelling, I wrote, reported, filmed and edited this story to encourage people to show up and support the cause.
