This is a collection of some of my best work from the 2020-2021 school year. For articles that went on pages, I included the PDF example of those pages. Full articles can be accessed through the underlined headlines.
COVID-19: One year later – News Feature
As vaccines rolled out across the country and the state, many Cherry Creek students became eligible for the vaccine. I wanted to provide information for students, teachers, and parents, while also including details that could ease the anxiety of all considering the vaccine. I interviewed medical providers at a COVID-19 vaccination site and teachers who had already gotten the vaccine. A shortened version was included on the first page of our spring 2021 issue, and a longer version with more information was included on our website – the web version focuses mostly on vaccinations. We have been masked and distanced for over a year now, and until more people are vaccinated, we'll remain that way. My hope with this article was to ease some people's fears about the vaccine and provide necessary information in order to get more people vaccinated and to get Creek and the community back to normal.
Recovering from the East Troublesome Fire – Photo Essay
In late October 2020, the East Troublesome Fire sparked and burned through tens of thousands of acres in a matter of days. It took more than a month and a half for the fire to burn itself out, and when it was finally safe to go back to the mountains, I went to document the damage, which led to this photo essay. This fire hit especially close to home for me because my grandparents' house was evacuated, and I watched as my dad left in the middle of the night to bring everything in their house down to safety. Luckily, my grandparents' house survived, but people only a few miles away weren't so lucky.
It's time to stop ignoring fascism in the White House. – News Opinion
During the 2020 election season, I found myself frustrated with repeated patterns that I saw in America's political climate. I decided to articulate my thoughts in an op-ed for our issue and website. I wrote down everything I'd been feeling since the 2016 election, and used then-President Donald Trump's tweets as a visual for my argument. The article was well-regarded by students at Creek and one student hung a copy of the magazine open to this page in the Fine Arts building – it remains there to this day.
WandaVision: a new reality for the MCU – Critical Review
I'm a huge Marvel fan, and after watching WandaVision, I was astonished by the complex structure of the show and the way it dealt with issues of mental health, grief, and loss. The most impressive part of the show for me was how it experimented with the sitcom structure, and how the idea of sitcoms tied so closely into main character Wanda's life story. I wrote about it to articulate all of my opinions on the show, as well as share my love of it with everyone who read the article. A shortened version of the article was included in the issue, while a longer version was posted on the website – readers could scan the QR code on the page to access the web version. I found some inspiration in this piece from other WandaVision reviews I'd read.
I've been a big Rockies fan since I was old enough to love baseball, and recently, Colorado has had to watch as the Rockies' management destroys the team. After the General Manager traded team star third baseman Nolan Arenado over the offseason, the sports world exploded. I wrote down a summary of both my opinions on the matter and others', as well as some of the facts in the situation. As a long time baseball fan, my knowledge of the sport allowed me to explore some of the deeper reasoning behind the Arenado trade and the other mistakes in management I'd noticed. The article was shared in a Rockies followers Facebook group with over 8,000 fans and received the most views on our website for the month of February.
Democracy falls as the US Capitol building is mobbed by right-wing extremists – Breaking News
Cherry Creek High School was in the middle of a remote school day when news broke that the US Capitol had become the site of an attempted coup. Almost immediately, students' social medias were full of information and questions. In covering the incident, I gathered a few student opinions in order to know what Creek kids most cared about learning from my writing, and even quoted one. I also quoted the representative who represents the district that our school and many of our students are located in, so that Creek kids would feel that the information in the article was relevant to them.
