My name is Carly Philpott, and I'm a junior and editor-in-chief of The Union St. Journal, the news publication at Cherry Creek High School. I've always been passionate about writing, and when I got to high school, journalism was the club I chose almost immediately. I carry my political passion into my writing, often specializing in political commentary and reporting on issues such as the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection and critical race theory education. I have been fascinated by ecology and biology for most of my life, and have covered two wildfires for the USJ, as well as on-campus animals and the threat of fire to our area. I'm also an avid fan of Marvel, The X-Files, Stranger Things, Twin Peaks, and many other TV and film franchises, and I often try to spread my love of those through critical reviews. I was honored with the Colorado Student Media Association Reporter of the Year award in May 2021.
I'm very passionate in nature education, and have volunteered as a junior counselor at Bluff Lake Nature Center since I was 12 and as a nature center host at Carson Nature Center since I was 13. At home, I live alongside my turtle, geckos, snakes, tarantulas, toads, and virtually countless fish and plants, as well as my parents, who are history professors, and my 8th-grade brother, who is also an aspiring journalist. When I'm not writing, you can find me watching Grey's Anatomy and Brooklyn Nine-Nine or catching up on math homework.
