Project Compassion - Confirmation Class 2023 & SSVP

In the spirit of compassion and unity, Project Compassion was a collaboration between pre-confirmation students of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Johor Bahru, (CIC), and the volunteer organization of the CIC, St. Vincent de Paul. The students were given an opportunity to experience their tireless efforts to support the less fortunate and for the students to experience firsthand the struggles of the poor. The purpose of the outreach program was to expose the students and create awareness of the unseen poor in society, to instill compassion, and to create the spirit of volunteering. The duration of the project was from May to August 2023, and the groups had to either prepare a video presentation or an article documenting their experience, to reflect on what they've learned and share it with a wider audience. Under the guidance of SSVP volunteer member Mr Andrew Leo, visits were arranged to the chosen families (FIN) {Friends in Need}, allowing students to witness and interact with the individuals and families living in these circumstances. This hands-on experience is crucial for creating empathy and not approaching them with pity. The cases selected were to shed light on the often-unseen struggles faced by solitary elderly individuals and families grappling to make ends meet.

Athletes And Their Journey To Success

In the world of sports, athletes with disabilities often go unappreciated. However, Paralympic athletes stories of perseverance and success are truly inspiring. One such athlete is Dennis Chong who has achieved success in his career, despite facing numerous challenges.

Dennis is a Paralympic swimmer, he currently walks with a rollater and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy which is a disorders that affect a person's ability to move and maintain balance and posture. Even with this, he achieved so much at 21 years old. He is currently a state Paralympic swimmer.

Since he was 6 years old, he took an interest in swimming. For Dennis, swimming is like a healing process for him, a place where he feels most calm and relaxed. He also practices everyday, striving to be the best. He received third place in Parasukma2022 and aims to be first next time.

But Dennis’s journey to success hasn't been easy. He has faced many challenges along the way, including inaccessible training facilities. Along with his parents help and his faith, he never gave up and the outcome was incredible. His parents were always there for him, even though they were tired, they were patient and supported him so that Dennis could have a quality life. Like any other person, Dennis plays computer games as a way to make friends. Dennis also likes watching the NBA and surf the internet.

In conclusion, Dennis's journey to success is a story of determination and passion. Despite facing numerous challenges, he has never given up on his dreams. We should be aware that there are people with disabilities and we should treat them with respect. Look at Dennis and his achievements. We need to show others that people with disabilities need our support and we should try our best to break down barriers so that they can have access to all facilities that they need.

Light in Solitude

Aunty Sophia's days may be solitary, but her spirit is anything but lonely. Though depending on the goodwill of her neighbours, she embodies a quiet strength that speaks volumes of her resilience.

Comments from the students: Knigel

"I was deeply moved by Aunty Sophia's story. It reminds us of the importance of looking out for our elderly neighbours and how a small act of kindness can make a world of difference in their lives."

"I am grateful to have had the chance to participate in this program. It opened my eyes to the struggles of the elderly living alone. I was struck by her faith and showed me that God is always there for us. I would like to join more volunteering organisations like SSVP. They truly do make a difference."
