Walk

Why Walk?

Walking is more than just a mode of transportation; it is an activity that benefits yourself and others. It improves your physical health by keeping you active and relieving stress. Choosing to walk can also reduce the strain that air pollution puts on us and the environment. By walking instead of driving, you can save money and get to your destinations practically while enjoying your surroundings more. Read below for a couple of walking experiences just off campus!

South Preston Street Corridor:

South Preston Street is a street near campus with many businesses that students from UofL commonly patronize. To get to these businesses, you should start at the roundabout next to The Nine and the SAC. Cross the roundabout going east, away from the SAC and the Nine, and walk past the softball stadium for about 500 feet. At this point, you’re at a crossroads. If you want ice cream or homestyle cooking, you can take a right onto Bradley Avenue and walk all the way to Eastern Parkway to Dairy Kastle and Cottage Inn Restaurants. Otherwise, continue straight until you get to Preston Street.

Take a right, and as you walk down, you’ll encounter the following points of interest for the next quarter mile, in order: Preston Park (walk down Augustus Street), Zanzabar, Christian Book Nook, Nord’s Bakery, and Sunergos Coffee. For other places, keep walking down Preston Street until you reach Eastern Parkway. Around this intersection are numerous other businesses, like White Castle, El Taresco, CVS, Heine Brothers Coffee, Dominos, King Donuts, El Nopal, and other places.

Old Louisville:

Old Louisville is a beautiful, lively neighborhood with social hubs perfect for UofL students to explore. This neighborhood is conveniently located just off campus, past Cardinal Towne and Bettie Johnson. As you venture off campus going down Third Street, you will first come across The Granville Pub, affectionately called “Granny.” Walk down Gaulbert Avenue towards Fourth Street and see the Old Louisville Tavern, a popular bar frequented by students. Walk north on Fourth Street until you reach Belgravia Court, a carless street that leads to St. James Court. These “courts” form a walkable neighborhood with beautiful Victorian-style houses that connect to Central Park. Just over 500 feet away from Central Park, located on Ormsby Ave, is Old Louisville Coffee Co-Op. This is a chill spot for students that is open late on the weekends. Ekstrom Library closes for the evenings on the weekends, making it a perfect place for your late-night grinds.

This is only a look into Old Louisville's offerings. Old Louisville has many other restaurants and stores frequently patronized by students, such as Magnolia Bar, Burger Boy, and Pizza Donisi. Old Louisville hosts several community events, such as the St. James Art Festival in the fall and the Louisville Shakespeare Festival in the summer, both free to attend.
