What is Care the Carer ?
Mental health conditions affect more than 160 million people across the European Union. Behind every person living with a mental health condition, there is often an informal carer—a family member, friend, or loved one—who provides daily support, understanding, and care. While this role is essential, it frequently comes with significant emotional, social, and psychological challenges that remain unseen and unsupported.
CARE the CARER is a project dedicated to recognising, supporting, and empowering informal carers, while also giving voice to people with mental health conditions. The initiative promotes a holistic and human-centred approach to mental health by equipping carers with practical self-care tools, emotional coping strategies, and accessible, reliable information.
In addition, CARE the CARER actively works to break public, self, and institutional stigma related to mental health. It promotes inclusion, empathy, and mental health literacy, contributing to more supportive communities and systems.
Special attention is given to carers from vulnerable groups—such as migrants, unemployed individuals, and minorities—who may face additional barriers to accessing support. By addressing these challenges, CARE the CARER helps build more inclusive, resilient, and compassionate societies for all.
Target Groups:
The target group of the CARE THE CARER project includes informal caregivers (family, friends, acquaintances) of people with mental health conditions, individuals with lived experience, and mental health professionals. Special focus is given to vulnerable groups such as migrants, unemployed people, minorities, and adults with disabilities. The general public, policymakers, and volunteers are also key audiences.
