Alternative Travel Options
Besides walking and biking, trains are typically one of the most sustainable ways to travel. Additionally, trains offer a first-class seat to some of the world’s most spectacular scenery that can’t be seen while on a plane.
Certain types of sea travel, like ferry boats are a good option as well!
Carbon Footprint of Modes of Transportation
A Slowly Decarbonizing Industry
However, some air-travel companies are attempting to become more sustainable. For example, Airbus is planning prototypes of a hydrogen-powered commercial airliner that will release zero carbon emissions, already hoping to release and use them as early as 2035. While these will still emit vapor contrails due to the burning of hydrogen, they would significantly decrease the warming effects of air travel by limiting or even eliminating carbon emissions.
