See Northern Nevada FTC League for schedule.
We design, build and program a robot to compete head to head, a 2 on 2 robot alliance game, where coopertition, gracious professionalism and strategy are applied to score the most points.
Skystone, this year's game, is based on Star Wars inspired building theme. See Link to Star Wars Lucas video with Skystone Game Animation, and 1 pager for game description.
Newly formed Carbon Units
Our team was now comprised of Dravid, Niko, Miles and Kavin, who are shown at left.
In our second season, we changed our name to CARBON UNITS, after what the android robot called the humans in the first Star Trek movie.
Nevada State FTC Championship, Las Vegas NV
Dravid C. - Dean's List Team Nominee
Highlights: Roadtrip to Las Vegas for the FTC State competition, bowling at Sam's Town, Rock Climbing at Rock Sport (Sparks). marching in Carson City's Nevada State Parade.
Challenges: Our team re-branding was a slow process, but we are very happy with the results, in terms of our theme, and our logo (because it looks cool, not because it is the Kekule' symbol for benzene!) and colors (cranberry red is the color of the Engineering personnel in Star Trek). We were blessed with a new mentor, Will, who helped us clean up our designs and programming, plus enabled us to control our robot with sensors that we had never even dreamed of being able to implement so quickly and effectively. Our robot was undefeated until the last qualifying match at State, but it was a tremendous season, nevertheless.
Carbon Units (then Fantom-234) in front, with the Sonic Screwdrivers (blue hats) and the Sage Ridge Scorpions (black shirts), our Winning Alliance partners at the 2018 Nevada State Championship, hosted by the Boys and Girls Club, Reno
During our Rookie season, we called ourselves Fantom-234. We had an amazing first year! We had a good robot but lots of disconnects during the League season, so our record was just OK. At the Nevada State Championship we finally found the root cause of our disconnects right after match #1, and, with a little bit of duct tape, went undefeated from there on, to win the Nevada State Championship of the Robot Game.
Nevada State Rankings
West SuperRegionals, Tacoma, Washington
Highlights: Lots of Outreach, including a great time coordintaing and competing in a RockSport Rockclimbing Fundraiser for the Optimist Club of Reno. Lots of learning about tools and how to build robots, and an amazing programming and testing effort since we did everything by time and distance, with no motor encoders, gyroscope, or any other positional sensors. A sensational trip to the very last West SuperRegional in Tacoma, Washington.
Challenges: Being complete neophytes to everything about building robots, from not knowing the difference between a regular and phillips screwdriver, to not having any programming experience whatsoever.
