This is the picture I used.
This is what the image looked like after I used Photoshop to edit out the background. I also edited the color balance, exposure, contrast, brightness, and hue. After these adjustments, I added a pixel filter in Photoshop.
After adding the pixel filter, I indexed the colors to only have 25 colors. This way, I could limit the color scope to hues available on LEGO.com.
Illustrator process.
Using Illustrator's 'Select' tool, I was able to figure out how much of each colored 1x1 plate I would need for this mosaic. I created this document for myself to stay organized. It shows quantities, prices, and other labels.
Here are all of the pieces I ordered from the Pick A Brick page on LEGO.com.
This is an instructional packet I made for Jordan in Illustrator.
This is the first page of the instructional packet which outlines the pieces included in the set.
This page of the packet shows the color key for all of the 1x1 plates.
These are some simple instructions that I depicted. I tried to emulate a similar design that LEGO does for their sets. I tried to "show" not "tell."
This is the second page of these instructions that shows how all of these individual 8x8 plates come together.
This is a reference guide from the packet showing where each 8x8 plate goes.
These pages from the instruction packet show how a few of the 8x8 plates come together. I made the guide true to size because I believe it will make assembly easier.
