At Capy's Commune, you’ll have the chance to meet some of the most fascinating creatures from around the world. Every animal here has a unique story, and we invite you to get to know them. Here are just a few of the friends you might meet during your visit:
Say hello to the world's largest rodent! These gentle giants are social, semi-aquatic animals native to South America. Often called "nature's chillest animal," you’ll find them relaxing by the water, snacking on grass, or napping in a group. Don't be surprised if they're soaking in a small pool—they love to swim!
Meet the amazing Sulcata Tortoise! They are the third-largest tortoises on Earth. Can you imagine? They can grow to weigh as much as an adult person and live longer than your grandparents! Sulcata Tortoises come from the hot deserts of Africa. Their signature look is their tall, bumpy shell, and the most unique thing about them is the two large, spur-like bumps on their back legs that help them dig big burrows to hide from the heat. Even though they look slow, they are super strong, friendly, and have a huge appetite—they love munching on grass and green veggies! They are the gentle, peaceful giants here at Capy's Commune!
Let's meet the fascinating Madagascar Hissing Cockroach! These aren't your typical backyard bugs; they are the world's largest cockroaches and come from the faraway island of Madagascar. Can you guess why they're called Hissing? When they get scared or annoyed, they let out a loud hissing sound—like a tiny air horn—from the breathing holes on their bodies! Although big and unique, they are actually clean-up heroes in the forest, munching on decaying leaves and fallen fruit. They don't have wings and are very docile, making them an incredibly cool and not-so-scary insect to observe!
Let's meet the fascinating Tarantula, the big, hairy giant of the spider world! Despite their size, tarantulas are actually very shy predators who prefer to hide in their burrows, and they can live for a surprisingly long time—up to decades! At Capy's Commune, you can see several cool types, like the Chaco Golden Knee tarantula with its golden shimmer, the Curly hair tarantula with curly, carpet-like hair, and the stunning Mexican Fire leg tarantula with fiery red stripes on its legs and other species from around the world. Remember, while they do have fangs, their bite is generally not dangerous to humans. They just want to live peacefully and show off how amazing these exotic creatures can be!
More animals will be moving in to Capy's Commune. Here's a sneak peek to the future residents in Capy's Commune.
Our smallest canids, the fennec foxes, are a sight to behold. Known for their uniquely large ears, these desert dwellers use them to radiate heat and listen for prey underground. You’ll be captivated by their curious eyes and their shy, yet playful demeanor. They are truly an enchanting addition to our family.
Come meet our clever and charismatic raccoons. With their distinctive black masks and bushy tails, these nocturnal animals are famous for their intelligence and dexterity. While they are known as "bandits," here at Expedition Wild, you’ll see them show off their problem-solving skills and playful nature as they explore their enclosure.
Meet our sentinels of the sand, the meerkats! These highly social and cooperative animals are famous for their habit of standing tall on their hind legs, keeping a watchful eye out for their family. You'll love watching their close-knit group forage, play, and communicate with each other in their bustling habitat.
Meet the fascinating Patagonian Mara! Often mistaken for a mix between a large rabbit and a small deer, this unique animal is actually the fourth-largest rodent in the world, closely related to the Capybara and guinea pig. Endemic to the arid grasslands of Argentina, Maras are built for speed with long, slender legs that allow them to run up to 28 mph and move with a unique four-legged bounce called stotting. Unusually for a rodent, they are monogamous and mate for life, with the male acting as a constant, vigilant bodyguard for his female.
