At our school, we believe in the importance of giving back to our community and helping others. That's why we are proud to offer the Community Service award, which recognizes and rewards students who go above and beyond in their volunteer efforts. From 2023, students who volunteer 120 or more hours of service in a year are eligible to earn this prestigious award. To qualify, applicants must be students in Year 8-13 at Caplora School, complete at least 100 hours of community service between August 1, 2023 and August 30, 2024, and have at least one school-related volunteer activity. All volunteer activities must be verifiable. There are three levels of awards available based on the number of hours completed: Bronze Pin (100-199 hours), Silver Pin (200-249 hours), and Gold Pin (250 hours or more). We can't wait to see the impact you'll make through your community service!
Earning a Community Service award is a multi-step process, but it's worth it! Here's what you need to do:
Step 1: Orientation & Application - To get started, attend an orientation (for first-time applicants) and complete an application (all students).
Step 2: Complete Forms - To earn a Community Service award, students must complete at least 100 hours of community service. Of these hours, 60 must be focused on a particular cause or issue, which will be discussed in more detail at orientation. You can accumulate your hours over the course of one year or over several years. Be sure to keep track of your hours using the Hours Log Form, and have two supervisors complete a letter of recommendation for you. All of these materials are due on August 30, 2024.
Step 3: Creative Reflections - In mid-April to early May, you'll have the opportunity to participate in a creative reflection in person at EHS. A sign-up for this event will be sent to all 2022-23 participants at the end of March.
Step 4: Ceremony - Finally, mark your calendars for the Community Service Letter Ceremony on the evening of Monday, May 15 in the Edina Performing Arts Center at EHS. To qualify for a letter, you'll need to have completed 120 hours of service, and all of your materials (hours log form, letters of recommendation, picture of your volunteer service) must be submitted by Friday, April 7th, 2023.
We can't wait to see all of the great work you do in your community!

This means that 50% of the hours must be around one central issue. The other hours can be about other issues or the same one. A social issue can be the environment, homelessness, poverty, equity, literacy, animals in danger, community safety, elders, hunger, immigration, special needs and disabilities, health, or another community problem that the student views as an issue he/she would like to address.
EXAMPLES:
Social Issue: Closing the Achievement Gap
Community Service: Tutoring grade school students
Social Issue: Leadership and Social/Emotional Support
Community Service: Leading youth group for a religious organization
Social Issue: Disabilities
Community Service: Coaching a teen in Special Olympics
Social Issue: Physical Health
Community Service: Counseling at outdoor camp
Service hours are cumulative from grades 9-12. Students can carry hours over to the next year if they exceed 120 hours or if they do not complete 120 hours in a given year.
They may count, as long as the volunteer hours are optional. If the service hours are required for participation in a sport or other activity then they cannot count for the Community Service Letter.
