I see a lot of comments in posts on the net about :- "Theft via your Fuel Tank air vent"
It’s a Simple Fix ... £8.69 or less, ebay amazon Halfords to name but a few :-
Step 1). Unscrew the Air Vent.
Clean threads with wire/brass brush.
Clean off dust and debris with solvent cleaner or methylated spirit (I use auto brake cleaner
for most degreasing jobs as it has two benefits Firstly, It dose not leave any residue,
secondly, It doesn’t cost much.)
Step 2). Apply:-
(RED) LOCTITE 271 High Strength Threadlock Glue.
Step 3). Refit The Air Vent loctite cures in 10mins, 24hrs for full strength ... Job done…. !
For the thieves to gain access they would have to heat the Brass Vent to remove it ! as well as have other tools ….. read on taken from Loctite Web Pages:-
Permanent Fix: Permanent seal prevents tampering and is only removable once cured by heating parts up to 500°F (260°C)
THREADLOCKER REMOVAL
Removing threadlocker:-
Loctite Threadlocker Red 271, is formulated to be a high strength thread locker, meaning it will require the localized heat of a blowtorch to weaken the bond. Here’s how it’s done.
You’ll need:
* A blowtorch
* Heat-resistant safety gloves
* Safety glasses
* A wrench
1. Wearing safety glasses and heat-resistant gloves, heat the fastener with the blow torch for 2-3 minutes, moving the torch around to heat all sides.
2. Turn off the blowtorch and remove the nut with a hand wrench.
Oddly enough I have never wanted to use a blowtorch any where near my fuel tank !!!
