Following Winn-Dixie's in, my opinion, a bit underhanded bid to take back over this store following Lucky's Market's bankruptcy, work got into slow gear to convert the store back over. The store officially opens tomorrow (December 9th, 2020), and I will soon have photos of the opening as well. But without further ado...
A Bad Moon Rising - Vacancy, Pre-Renovation
August 7th, 2020
The space spent some time sitting simply vacant, without much done to it. A visit on a stormy August evening gave me our header image, and one of the best photos I've ever taken.
Power still flowed to the building, lighting up the Lucky's logo in bright lights, and no barriers or tarps had gone up to block the interior.
Winn-Dixie had made some progress on the property at this point, pulling out shelving and most things not attached to the walls. But at a distance, it looked as if nothing had changed...
Scattered shots of the front-end. The baskets, which I missed during liquidation sales, sit there, taunting me. They likely went to an auction or liquidation company not long after this.
Two signs- one corporate, one personal. Lucky's always felt much more entwined in the community, despite their chain status. And it worked in their favor- more than a few people have disavowed the new Winn-Dixie before it's even opened, because they're upset they kicked Lucky's out.
These "garage doors", a distinctive part of Lucky's decor, would be bricked in by Winn-Dixie, after they got done using them to shuffle equipment in and out of the building.
It Begins - Interior Demolition
October 3rd, 2020
By this point, more serious (and destructive) work had begun. While Lucky's signage had been thinly covered by some banners, the dumpsters on site attest to the work being done. Wall decor and some interior walls were being jackhammered out to make way for Winn-Dixie's layout. I was hoping I might be able to snag a sign or something, but everything was buried under rubble or already destroyed during removal.
The banner for the Winn-Dixie liquor store also brings me to another note: When Lucky's took over this store (originally a Winn-Dixie), they didn't take over the entire building, leaving a small slice behind. Now that Winn-Dixie is moving back in, they're only using Lucky's footprint for the grocery store, and using the extra slice as the liquor store, adding one to a store that originally lacked it.
Yes, this store has gone Winn-Dixie -> Lucky's Market -> Winn-Dixie. It's a bit of a confusing mouthful to talk about.
Pre-Opening - Finishing Touches
November 11th, 2020
By this point, I imagine much of the work left is internal. Externally, the store is pretty much done. I couldn't get much closer due to the fact I swung by in the middle of the workday, so there were still workers buzzing about.
