The Cameron Mews townhomes were built in 1965 on reclaimed land that has played an important part in the historical development of Alexandria as a major port on the Potomac. There is an excellent history of the Alexandria waterfront found in the Alexandria City Waterfront History Plan developed by the city in 2010. (see especially pgs 47-57 for the immediate vicinity of Cameron Mews) After World War II, the Alexandria waterfront began a transformation from a gritty and run down industrial and commerical port to a more genteel residential and historic preservation/tourist oriented urban center. Cameron Mews was one of the first residential redevelopment projects leading this transformation.
