The heart and soul of Cambodia.
Angkor Wat (Khmer: អង្គរវត្ត, meaning "City of Temples") is a massive Hindu-Buddhist temple complex in Cambodia. It is an architectural masterpiece and holds the distinction of being the largest religious monument in the world.
Located
Angkor Wat is located in Siem Reap Province, in northwestern Cambodia. It is about 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles) north of Siem Reap town, within the larger Angkor Archaeological Park.
Area
Angkor Wat temple complex covers an area of approximately 162.6 hectares (about 1.6 square kilometers or 402 acres). This includes the central temple structure, surrounding moats, galleries, and courtyards.
The main purpose of building Angkor Wat Temple are:
Religious Center: It was the state temple of the Khmer Empire, reflecting Hindu cosmology and intended to honor the gods—especially Vishnu, which was unusual since most Khmer temples were dedicated to Shiva.
Royal Mausoleum: It was also designed as the king's tomb, symbolizing his divine status and ensuring his journey to the afterlife.
Angkor Wat is part of the Angkor World Heritage site, a complex of temples and ruins in Cambodia, and it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992. The site is considered of "outstanding universal value" due to its architectural, artistic, and historical significance, representing a major civilization in South-East Asia.

Autumnal Equinox (ព្រឹត្តិការណ៍សមរាត្រី)
The Autumnal Equinox at Angkor Wat is a remarkable event that highlights the deep astronomical and spiritual knowledge of the Khmer Empire.
What is the Autumnal Equinox?
The Autumnal Equinox occurs around September 22–23 each year, when day and night are approximately equal in length. It marks the start of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.
Angkor Wat and the Equinox
Angkor Wat, built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II in present-day Cambodia, is not only a massive Hindu temple complex but also a sophisticated astronomical observatory. During the Autumnal Equinox, a unique phenomenon occurs:
Key Features of the Equinox at Angkor Wat
Sunrise Alignment:
On the morning of the Autumnal Equinox, the rising sun aligns precisely with the central tower of Angkor Wat when viewed from the western entrance. The sun appears to crown the temple, symbolizing divine power and cosmic order.
Architectural Design:
The temple is oriented east–west, not north–south like many later Buddhist structures. This orientation allows for such solar alignments during both equinoxes (spring and autumn). It suggests intentional planning for solar and celestial events.
Spiritual and Symbolic Meaning:
In Hindu cosmology, the equinox may symbolize balance between the forces of light and darkness, creation and destruction.Angkor Wat was dedicated to Vishnu, and its alignment may reflect cosmic harmony central to Hindu beliefs.
The Autumnal Equinox at Angkor Wat will occur on September 22nd, 2025. This is a time when the sun aligns perfectly with the central tower of Angkor Wat, creating a unique and memorable spectacle.
I warmly invite everyone to come and witness this rare and beautiful moment in person.
Don’t miss the chance to experience the sunrise at Angkor Wat during the Autumnal Equinox — it’s truly unforgettable!
