Tuning tips

MAST POSITION

1. Eyeball from tip to base of mast. Correct bend with diamond stays. Try to have the mast straight.

2. Lay boat on one side and measure from tip of the mast to the floor. Put boat on the other side and measure. By tightening or loosening side stays – make the measurements equal. The mast will be centrally located from side to side.

3. Set mast straight or slightly aft rake. Set this by using the jib head stay bowsie and backstay bowsie. At 45-3/4 inches above deck on the mast, a line to the bow would be approximately 48-3/4 to 49 inches long

4. Tighten back stay – snug but not tight. Looser is usually faster.

SAILS

(Lay boat on its side, or tip boat in its cradle to about 30 degrees)

A. MAIN

1. Down haul - Tighten downhaul tension on the main so there is about 1/8" play - just enough to get rid of the wrinkles.

2. Out haul – about 1-1/2” curve (from boom.)

3. Trim main sheet until boom the points to the corner of the intersection where the transom and side meet.

4. Adjust the boom vang so that it lets the boom ride up about 1/4 inch. Maybe a tad more would be better. In heavy air you may want more twist (loosen the vang) with a flatter sail (tighten the out haul).

B. JIB

1. Down haul - Tighten downhaul tension on the jib so there is about 1/8" play - just enough to get rid of the wrinkles. Too much tension on the down haul is as harmful to speed as is too much tension on the back stay

2. Out haul - about 1-1/2” curve (from boom.)

3. Trim in so tip of boom points to the side stay.

Test Sail

1. Check back stay tension – sail away close hauled and observe main and jib leech shape. If the jib too flat - ease back stay tension If the jib too full – tighten back stay.
