The Issues
Safety: "We all understand the importance of feeling safe in our community. Our students deserve to be safe when they're at school, and I know as a parent how much trust goes into sending your child five days a week to school with other adults. And we have to invest in intervention and prevention strategies to be proactive about safety and belonging. I know the City of Hayward and HUSD have been working closely together on this issue, and I’m eager to help with that and to listen to the school leaders and our community to design something that’s uniquely tailored to meet the needs of our schools. ."
Early Childhood Education (ECE): "During my years of service as a board member for the Community Child Care Council (aka 4Cs) of Alameda County, I understand how vitally important ECE is to the success of our students and their families. And I'm excited to be a voice with experience on the board in this subject, especially now that the State of California has issued funding to expand K-12 to include early childhood education."
Literacy: "I was a proud parent on the day that the district adopted its Literacy Plan because I know what their reading level can mean for a child's future. If our students feel confident about reading, then they will feel confident about other learning that happens in the classroom. And back to early childhood education, this learning needs to happen as early as possible. If our students know how to read at grade level, it opens up a lot more opportunity for them to stay engaged in school as they matriculate. Once on the board, I'm really looking forward to seeing how I can help support the Literacy Plan and make it even more expansive by using my expertise while serving on the board for the 4Cs of Alameda County."
Tobacco: "I am proud to have passed several policies in school districts across counties to help eradicate tobacco from campuses. As vaping becomes its own epidemic, the time to press this issue at schools becomes even more necessary, and I'm eager to work with HUSD to help with tobacco and other drug prevention programs. This is where my expertise in writing, passing, and implementing policy will contribute to our district and community."
Charter Schools: "I believe wholeheartedly in supporting our district schools. That's why Jeaneen and I have our son in an HUSD elementary school. The fact remains that charter schools hurt district schools. Since my job as a trustee would be to do all within my power to protect and support HUSD schools, I would never approve a new charter to enter the district. Furthermore, I would do everything within my power to hold existing charters accountable."
