Calyn Kelley’s story is one of triumph over tragedy. In 2005, in San Francisco, Calyn was violently robbed and shot in an incident that nearly took his life. Calyn was partially paralyzed on the upper right side of his body for over 7 years. After many surgeries and countless hours of rehabilitative therapy, Calyn regained physical strength and triumphed over his injuries. That's when he and his partner, Jeaneen, moved to Hayward, where Calyn began the long road of emotional recovery.
Calyn’s faith, family, and educational journey was the catapult that helped him regain the voice activism and public service that had been so tragically taken from him in San Francisco during his violent injury.

Experience as an EducatorCalyn has a strong passion for early care in education and has been involved in developing curriculum, teaching, and educating high school age youth for the last 15 years. Through organizations such as College Track and Achieve Learning, Calyn has taught and educated in the San Francisco Unified School District and the Contra Costa County Unified School District.
Calyn currently, writes, develops and advocates for tobacco prevention polices both locally and at the state level. He teaches and educates high school age youth within the Solano County School District and the San Joaquin County School District, teaching them how to organize tobacco prevention campaigns and how to get tobacco prevention ordinances championed and passed by local decision makers in local jurisdictions to save young lives. To date Calyn has contributed to passing tobacco prevention ordinances in Vallejo, Stockton, Hayward and is working to strengthen those ordinances to protect our youth from the deadly harms of tobacco usage.
Calyn earned an AA in English at Chabot College and then transferred to CSU East Bay, where he earned a BA in English literature. He then studied in the Urban and Public Affairs graduate program at University of San Francisco, where he received his MA in Public Policy.
Experience as a Community LeaderCalyn’s community service career began to blossom immensely in 2018 when he worked on the Alameda County Measure A which was a ½ cent sales that would be used to overhaul Alameda County’s childcare system and make childcare affordable for Alameda County families as well as provide Alameda County early care and education workers with affordable wages. The measure recently passed in 2024 as ‘Measure C’ providing $150 million a year for Alameda County early care and education.
In 2019 Calyn’s graduate level work led to him having the opportunity to be elected to serve as vice chair of the San Francisco Tobacco Free Coalition where he now serves as co-chair. He is also a member of the University of San Francisco’s Urban and Public Affairs Alumni Steering Committee. He is an American Cancer Society Legislative Policy Advocate for California’s 14th congressional district.
Engagement as a ParentCalyn and Jeaneen have lived in Hayward for 15 years. Hayward is where they purchased their home and started a family. Their 9-year-old son attends school in Hayward Unified School District.
He is a current cohort member in the Hayward Promise Neighborhood Community Leadership Initiative. Calyn is also an African American Scholastic Achievement Initiative Parent within HUSD and was recognized this year for outstanding service and commitment to the Hayward Unified School District by U.S. Congressman Eric Swalwell, California State Assembly member Liz Ortega, California State Senate member Aisha Wahab.
Calyn is also a member of the Fairview Elementary School PTA and a member of the Hayward Unified School District Equity Oversight Committee. Calyn was also presented with a ‘Hearts of Hayward’ award this year for outstanding volunteer service in Hayward by Alameda County Supervisor’s Eliza Marquez’s office.
In his spare time Calyn loves being a father and a great companion to his partner. He also is the co-founder of the micro philanthropy start up called ‘I-Earn Life’ which helps resource disadvantaged Bay Area high school athletic programs.
Experience as a TrusteeCalyn has also had the esteemed privilege of serving two terms as the President and Chair of the Alameda County early care and education resource agency, Community Child Care Council, where he now serves on the resource and executive committees as a sitting board of directors’ member.
