Ms. Wormwood notices that Calvin is always bored with her class. So she needs a way to keep Calvin interested in her class. One of the ways she can do this is to make connections between the content and Calvin's hobbies for example, space or dinsours.
Ms. Wormwood can create a lesson plan that keeps Calvin interested by connecting math to his interest in space. She could explain to Calvin that math is used to understand the distance between stars, planets, and Earth, as well as to calculate the paths of spaceships. For an activity, she could give Calvin different distances between stars and have him use addition and multiplication to calculate the total distance between them. For example, Calvin could be given the distance from Earth to one star and then calculate the distance to another star. This would allow Calvin to practice his math skills while connecting the lesson to something he is interested in. By making the math activity relevant to Calvin's interests, Ms. Wormwood could increase his topic interest and motivation to participate in the lesson.
Another connection Ms. Wormwood can make is between her geography lesson and Calvin's interest in dinosaurs. She could create an activity where Calvin draws a map showing where he thinks different dinosaurs would have lived in a specific area. She could also ask him to identify which dinosaurs lived on land and which animals lived in the ocean. This would allow Calvin to use his creativity while learning about geography and different environments. By connecting the lesson to Calvin's interest in dinosaurs, Ms. Wormwood can help make the material more interesting and meaningful to him. This could increase his topic interest and encourage him to become more engaged in the lesson.
Ms. Wormwood needs to apply interest theory to her classroom and using the interest models as her support. By using the models she can make her classes more interesting for Calvin and keep him from day dreaming. The models she can use is the TTES model or the Four-Phases to interest. Adding interest theory to her lessons, it can become a lot more fun for all of her students including Calvin.
By adding interest theory, Ms. Wormwood can watch as Calvin might in more engaging with the content she is teaching. Calvin becomes more and more interested he can come up with questions about the content for Ms. Wormwood to anwser. If Calvin in more interested in the class he won't be day dreaming about his hobbies when they are right in front of him.
