Effective Teaching Methods

Offering Choices:

By offering choices to students it promotes self determination and active listening. Offering choices builds on students interests. Students should be given feedback about how their choices affected their learning. This puts the responsiblity of learning on the students. An example is letting students choose who they work with. Another example is if you are doing a project, giving students choices on how they do that project. 

Use well organized and captivating texts: 

When choosing texts, use relevent texts that are full of imagery, suspense and are engaging and familiar to the students. Prior to reading the texts with the students, give the students background information to get the students interested and wanting to learn more. When reading the texts, highlight important themes and information so students can identify what they are learning. 

Teaching Models:

The TTES Model is defined as the perspective of learning as engagement, rather then teaching only the content, make the connection to the students everyday lives. As an educator, the goal is to foster transformative learning in the classroom. An example of this in a classroom came from a movie, Dead Poets Society. In one of the sences Robin Williams charater, John Keeting, stood up on of of the desks and all the students became interested in that lesson because it was "wrong" to stand on the desks. 

The Brophy's Model contains 3 steps. The first step is teaching worthwhile content. The Second step is framing to simulate appreciation. The last step is scaffolding with the ZDP (Motivational Zone of Proximal Development). An example in the classroom, the activity can be catered to a certain student but it can work for the other students in the class as well, when the teacher uses scaffolding for the activity.
