Avoid “payment” for attendance and grades
Provide students with the opportunity to improve (retakes/revisions) & feedback
Support students with creating and attaining their goals (time management, self-regulation, learning something new)
Take advantage of students’ backgrounds and experiences–get to know your students’ interests and what they already know
Mastery-based grading focuses on how well a student understood the content and leaves room for growth. Since students learn differently and learning is not linear, it allows students to develop an understanding at their own pace.
Grade students based on their understanding.
Students should learn something new, then be assessed
After they are assessed, they should have the opportunity to revise their work with the provided feedback
Assessments should not be a one-and-done thing
Allow students to improve and make corrections until they understand the content
Have students set goals using the following template or something similar. There are many templates for planers and goal setting online that can help with self-regulation, improvement, and time-management.
