Analysis of Calvin

What is Calvin's motivational pattern?

With the four phases that are present in Interest Theory, Calvin appears to not even be aligned with phase one, which is Triggered Situational Interest. Thus, he inherently can not be experiencing any other phases because again, each phase is sequential and dependent on the other. Due to the first two phases being primarily externally supported, a lot of engagement and support in finding new ways to interact with the content in a way that better suits Calvin will mainly be derived from Mrs. Wormwood. She will be the catalyst and facilitator of the new material for all students and will have to find new instructional methods that Calvin perceives as adding value to his knowledge base.

Why does Calvin have this problem?

Example Below

The content is not related to his personal background: Calvin struggles to relate something he enjoys to school. I think this is a case where Miss Wormwood can help jog his brain and give Calvin and the class some examples of subjects to relate to

"Flow" is not achieved by the teacher: Miss Wormwood is going to have a hard time getting students interested because she calls them out for not paying attention. Instead, she should adhere to the children by creating content the students can relate to

What can the teacher do to foster interest?

Example Below

Offer help to students who are struggling to motivate themselves to the content: Miss Wormwood can do a few things to help engage Calvin a little more. Here in the example above, Miss Wormwood fails to offer help to Calvin although it is clear that he needs help. Miss Wormwood blames it on his lazy work but students are not able to engage in the activities if they don't understand the content.

Make sure the content you are teaching is worth teaching: Although Miss Wormwood might think that the content she is teaching is worth Calvin's time, Calvin might not know. It is Miss Wormwood's job to explain the reason behind the content to help students understand why they should be paying attention to what is being taught.

Model your own interest in the content by being enthusiastic: In general, Miss Wormwood can be seen as unenthusiastic in all the comics as she is in this one. Students will mirror the negative attitude towards the lesson. Even if teachers don't love teaching a certain unit, they need to show the students that they love it
