Performing tasks and doing things for intrinsic reasons such as personal enjoyment, interest, satisfaction, and a sense of accomplishment. In order to feel intrinsically motivated, a student must first feel a sense of competence (self-worth), sense of autonomy (control/choice), and a sense of belonging (relatedness). A sense of competence is when an individual is confident in their capabilities in an activity and know they can successfully perform certain skills. An individual has a high sense of autonomy when they engage in activities because they choose to for their own personal enjoyment, not because they feel pressure from external factors. Sense of belonging comes when the individual is sharing experiences with others and growing meaningful relationships.
The best kind of motivation. When intrinsically motivated, individuals are proactive in seeking new opportunities and challenges to persist until successful.
Doing things for external reasons such as money, praise, acceptance, avoidance of punishment, etc.. When an individual is solely motivated to obtain a kind of reward, they are extrinsically motivated; even when an individual is not necessarily interested or passionate about a specific task, they could be extrinsically motivated by a reward.
Component of almost all of motivation and can sometimes undermine intrinsic motivation
Motivated out of social pressure/obligation, shame, or guilt
Anxiety and creates difficulty for individuals to feel confident about themselves and their actions.
Seeing the value of the activity because it benefits in achieving goals and towards their development/growth.
Beneficial towards the individual's end goal, therefore does not need to be enjoyable
The activity is a part of the individual's identity
Individual is aware of personal needs and values
