Ivan has been kept alone in captivity for 27 years. He was an attraction for a circus themed mall. Ivan did not have contact with another gorilla during his entire time there.
I would describe this book as a collection of Ivans thoughts. It is almost like he is journaling down everything he thinks in a day. When I realized Ivan had been alone for almost 27 years I was really upset. However, I kept reading. The relationships Ivan forms are incredible. From Julia slipping a crayon in his domain to his friendships with Bob, Stella. You forget that Ivan is a gorilla as he "speaks." He is eloquent and thoughtful with his actions. He does not see himself as a dangerous threat to humans. He realizes he is different, but I don't think he realizes HOW different.
