After coming across the two most popular designs on the market (the Water Lily and the Enomad Uno), we were intrigued but disappointed. First, both designs were significantly overpriced ($199 and $280, respectively). For consisting of small, cost effective electronic components and injection molded plastics, the price markup is unreasonable. Secondly, both designs are painfully non-modular and customization. Regardless of the buyer's geographic location, both models are shipped with the same generator turbine regardless of expected wind/water speed or use.
However, the market potential is significant. As attention continues to shift towards renewable energy sources, demand for personal devices have skyrocketed. In the case of the Enomad Uno, the company was able to raise nearly $150,000 in a short amount of time through their Kickstarter campaign. They also received an enormous amount of fanfare and media attention from CCTV, Gizmag, Inhabitat, The Verge, GiGadgets, CNN, and a myriad of others.
