Stop motion is the act of putting together still frame images to simulate movement. They are used as a took for marketing projects and creating engaging posts. It is also a storytelling tool, that puts a unique spin on telling a story through art.
When I was looking for stop motion inspiration, I was mostly steered towards the marketing images. There was another subcategory that contained art that told a story. Although I think that those gifs look really cool, they don't line up with my interests. Plus it is harder to create that type of work on a college campus.
This was one of my first successful stop motion attempts. I liked the simplicity of using the letters to spell out a message. I had tried this once before and had issues with lighting and background. So I decieded to use the table in my common room as a backdrop.
I really liked this idea because skittles has the tagline "taste the rainbow." I think the formation of the rainbow could have gone a little smoother/ faster. But overall, I like the way that this one turned out.
This was one of my later attempt at a gif. The focus is a little blurry on the edges due to teh way my Canon Camera focused (I tried to change it while taking the photos with no success). My favorite thing about this gif is that it has small gradual motions and it was the first one that I played around with more of a jump cut style. Therefore the composition isn't my favorite but the motion presented is interesting.
This project actually caused me the most difficulty thus far. I had a lot of struggles with capturing the images to create a nice looking gif. My first attempt was recreating the cholocate bar one shown in the inspiration but struggled with the plastic being hard to manipulate. I few of my other ideas like making a puzzle were just too long or not a strong enough composition. For this project I tried to use colored paper to create a studio-like background, but this caused the photos to look wierd rather than professional. Additionally it was problamatic because the camera would adjust the lighting for when there were no items on the black backdrop. I ended up using Adobe After Effects to create the gifs and then imported them into photoshop to make them smaller (better for web use). The hardest part of stop motion is capturing workable images with strong compositions.
