Liquidity and Mortality of Low-Wage Workers: Evidence from Wage Allowances in Brazil - with Raphael Corbi - [draft]
Investigating whether low-income individuals are more likely to face life-threatening events immediately after receiving a payment from the government;
Because such workers are liquidity-constrained, they do not smooth consumption and increase it immediately after the payment, engaging in behavior that favors mortality, such as substance abuse, eating unhealthy meals, etc;
Using both a TWFE and RDD approach, we found an increase of 9.5% in mortality counts in the week of payment for eligible workers, when compared to other weeks and non-eligible peers. In Broad Nightlight: The Effects of Ambient Light on Non-violent Crime in Sao Paulo - with Naercio Menezes-Filho
Studying the impact of a program that increased the level of public lighting in some districts of São Paulo on criminal activity;
Use of satellite data on nighttime lights to evaluate the size of the intervention;
Increased level of ambient light has a negative effect on violent crime, but positive on non-violent, due to the increased supply of potential victims that choose to circulate more in better-lit areas;
Estimated with the new DiD methodology presented by Callaway & Sant'Anna (2020).
Slow and Steady: The Effects of Speed Limit Reductions on the Number of Accidents in the City of Sao Paulo. - with Rodrigo Moita
Studying the impact of a program decreasing the speed limit of some São Paulo streets in the number of accidents and deaths recorded in them;
Using a TWFE approach, we find a negative effect on accident counts of speed reduction. This effect is larger in streets in which the speed reduction was larger. Effect disappears if the reduction was reversed at a later date;
Currently, we're updating the analysis with the new DiD methodologies such as the one presented by Callaway & Sant'Anna (2020).
