First day interns are here, they are to meet with Michele to go over expectations. Interns will then sign off on the expectations.
First day intern is here, they will shadow a technician to see how the day goes and how appointments flow.
Create and work off of check list for interns on what they should be learning and completely each week they are here. Timelines may differ if they are only here for a few days a week.
Interns should never be standing around. They can always be doing something like cleaning, laundry, shadowing a technician, or watching a procedure.
It is important to always ask interns questions (ie: vaccines, stats, etc..) to gauge where interns knowledge is at so we know what they need to be taught.
Make sure interns understand how to create an estimate and what is listed on the estimate and why. This will better help them explain to clients what is on the estimate and help give them confidence when explaining it to clients.
For any issues, first go to Sam, then Michele, then to Dr. Palmer (Pima) if needed
Make sure to ask if interns are on track! It is interns’ responsibility to know when their midterm and final is, but make sure to check in with them. Midterm should be around 120hrs but differs for each intern. If an intern’s midterm is coming up and there have been multiple issues, can have Michele do the midterm.
Sam is to meet with interns at the end of each week to check in with them and go over anything that needs to be fixed or adjusted. Interns who are only here a few times a week will meet with Sam every other week. Michele can do end of week check ins if needed.
Make sure when interns do something incorrectly or not up to par with out standards, we communicate that to them and try to fix the issue before we take over for them. This way they have a chance to learn and change the error.
Interns need to have a sense of urgency with appointments. Make sure to set specific benchmarks for how long each portion of the appointment should take. Can lend timer to intern to help them stay on track. Michele can help speed along interns if needed!
Make sure all interns get a check in sheet guideline for both standard appointments and procedure drop-offs
Make sure interns are all trained the same way on how to do intake, history, and vitals for patients. Interns should use an iPad to enter notes directly into medical record so no notes are missed.
Make sure interns know WHY the pet is here for their appointment before going into the room. It is better to walk into room and know why patient is here vs asking ”Why are they here?” Interns also need to know why pet is here so they can properly relay info to doctor.
It is okay to be stricter the first few weeks an intern starts so they learn what is expected of them and how things run at the clinic.
