As much as this is a portrait of a young woman in Colonial America - this is a personification of America herself.

Painted in the late 16 to early 1700's this portrait of an Irish Puritan immigrant with her distinct and energetic red hair is meant to be a personification of our then young country. This young woman is offering an apple (a known symbol of bounty) and she is depicted holding an entire bushel full showing the abundance our land has to offer. Her sleeves rolled up symbolic of what can be accomplished through hard work. She is dressed in our nations colors of red white and blue which are also the colors of the Union Jack. This altogether showcases the hope opportunity abundance and freedom our country offers.

This representation of America is I believe still relevant and applicable in achieving what it was created to do hundreds of years ago.

This would have been a wonderful welcome to Puritans arriving in the Bay Colony and would be a wonderful welcome for anyone entering your home, kitchen, dining room, living room or even would look lovely above a harvest table.
